The Film Institute provides funding for screening organisations – i.e. not-for-profit organisations which co-ordinate cinemas or film studios across Sweden.
The Swedish cinema market comprises close to 300 different cinema owners, of which the majority are small or very small. Many of the cinemas in villages or small towns and the complementary belong to not-for-profit organisations – so-called screening organisations.
The screening organisations support the smaller cinemas through activities including booking and inspiration days relating to film. In this way the screening organisations influence the choice of films across Sweden. Certain screening organisations also increase the choice by providing the institutional market with quality films.
