Plot summary

Seppan is the largely autobiographical story of Agneta Fagerström-Olsson’s own childhood in ‘Seppan’ in Tullinge, south of Stockholm. Her father was CEO of Alfa Laval and her friends were the children of the workers at the Separator factory – workers who came from all corners of a war-torn Europe.

The film stands out among the childhood stories at Swedish cinemas in the 1980s. Death is constantly present, sexuality is a recurring subject of conversation among the prepubescent children, and some of the fathers sometimes drink a bit too much and get violent. But everything is seen through the eyes of Sara, Pirjo and the other children, and this is their story.

Seppan was Fagerström-Olsson’s debut as a fiction film director. Originally made for TV and broadcast on SVT in two long episodes in 1986, following great acclaim and several awards both in Sweden and abroad the film was re-edited as a feature and released in cinemas in 1987.

Agneta Fagerström-Olsson was one of many women filmmakers to make their debut and breakthrough during the late 1970 and 1980s, other examples being Suzanne Osten, Gunnel Lindblom and Marie-Louise Ekman. Their films have been digitally restored by the Swedish Film Institute and are available with English subtitles.
